In September 2007 JM Solutions, Ltd., branched out to begin a program designed specifically for high school juniors and seniors. After much brainstorming and long meetings what resulted was the Beyond the Umbrella Newsletter and Seminar Series. The transition between high school and college can be difficult at the best of times! Too often students who enter college fail to graduate and become just another statistic. The goal of Beyond the Umbrella is to make it so that the majority of students who enter college not only graduate but thrive and find success Beyond the Umbrella of High School.
Regardless of the field, employers typically look for four skill sets when hiring. First, the ability to expertly communicate thoughts and ideas using both verbal and non-verbal mediums. Secondly, the ability to actively listen. Thirdly, the ability to negotiate. Fourthly, the ability to persuade others. Each of these skills take years to master and yet every employer expects a college graduate to have not only an understanding of the skill but also be well on their way to mastering each of them. As these skills don’t just magically appear when a student graduates from college, we decided to create a program, that when followed, allows students regardless of their academic acuity to find success in college and upon graduation secure top paying jobs. Using the Beyond the Umbrella newsletter and seminar series we teach high school juniors and seniors to treat their college career like a small business. We teach students how to become experts in the skills of communication, active listening, negotiation and persuasion. We teach students to use their college years as a training opportunity to master the skills most students will only begin trying to master upon graduation thus giving them a head start on their competition.
The Beyond the Umbrella program consists of two equally important parts. The first part is a free newsletter that is published three times a year, January, April and November. The newsletter is free to download and for schools to publish or distribute throughout their school. The second part of the program is the seminar series. The seminar series is designed specifically with high school juniors and seniors in mind and range in length from 1 to 4 days. There are exercises and homework that must be completed but there is also the opportunity to earn one of several scholarships that value over $1,000 each.
Between the newsletter and seminar series, Beyond the Umbrella is reaching over 250,000 high school students around the world. With each issue published and with each seminar series completed students learn that success in college doesn’t have to be left up to chance.
